$29 Million SUI Tokens Stolen in Recent Blockchain Theft
Blockchain investigator ZachXBT reported a theft of $29 million in SUI tokens on December 12, 2024. The incident involved:
- The theft of 6.27 million SUI tokens.
- Funds were transferred from the Sui network to Ethereum using bridging tools.
- The stolen tokens were laundered via Tornado Cash.
- The victim transferred .sui domain holdings to a secure wallet post-theft.
- Challenges in tracking the stolen funds due to limitations in Sui's analytics tools.
ZachXBT noted that current limitations impede tracing efforts. This incident is part of broader security challenges in the blockchain sector, exemplified by Phemex's recent report of over $37 million lost due to unusual hot wallet activity.
The Sui blockchain, launched in 2023, has rapidly gained traction with over 50 million registered accounts and a market cap of $12 billion, becoming the 16th largest cryptocurrency. Co-founder Adeniyi Abiodun outlined plans for 2025 focusing on artificial intelligence, gaming, and fintech, aiming to enhance practical applications despite ongoing security concerns.
Abiodun stated, “2025 we’re going way beyond ‘faster finality.’ We’re designing a future where Sui becomes the backbone for finance, gaming, AI-driven agents, and everyday apps.”
This situation underscores the need for improved security measures and analytics tools in the evolving blockchain landscape.
