ABN AMRO Completes Pilot Program for Tokenized Securities on Ethereum
ABN AMRO, a major Dutch bank, has completed a pilot program for on-chain settlement of tokenized securities on the Ethereum blockchain in collaboration with 21X, a Frankfurt-based financial services company. The trial took place in January 2025 and aimed to streamline financial transactions through smart contract automation.
Key Details of the Pilot
- The pilot focused on issuing and settling tokenized securities using stablecoins.
- ABN AMRO created an ERC-3643 token on the Polygon Amoy Testnet.
- The digital asset was paired with an ERC-20 “E-Money Token” on 21X’s trading platform.
- The test evaluated blockchain's potential to replace traditional clearing and settlement systems.
The successful pilot supports the upcoming launch of 21X’s digital asset exchange, which holds an EU-regulated trading license. Under this arrangement, 21X will serve as the trading venue while ABN AMRO acts as the custodian of the assets.
Future Plans
- ABN AMRO and 21X plan to expand their partnership to integrate 21X’s exchange.
- The aim is to provide ABN AMRO customers access to listed digital assets.
This initiative follows ABN AMRO’s previous experiments with digital assets, including issuing a €5 million tokenized green bond in 2023 and trials with the European Central Bank regarding central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). The collaboration with 21X represents a significant step toward practical integration of blockchain in banking.
21X aims to become a leading regulated digital asset exchange in Europe, facilitating fully on-chain trading without traditional intermediaries.
