Bernie Moreno Defeats Incumbent Sherrod Brown in US Senate Race
Republican challenger Bernie Moreno defeated sitting US Senator Sherrod Brown, leading 50.6% to 46% as of 11:30 pm ET with 91% of votes reported, according to Politico.
Moreno had not made a public statement, and Brown had not conceded at the time of publication. Both teams did not respond to Blockworks’ request for comment.
Brown, chair of the Senate Banking Committee, is viewed by the crypto industry as an adversary. He voted against overturning the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s SAB 121 accounting guidance, which passed both chambers with bipartisan support but was vetoed by President Biden.
Senator Cynthia Lummis has expressed that Brown has not prioritized getting crypto bills to the Committee for markup and votes, including a bipartisan effort with Senator Kristin Gillibrand. Gillibrand, also up for re-election, defeated Republican Mike Sapraicone with 58% of the vote.
Moreno, a car salesman, emphasized crypto in his campaign, vowing to block a CBDC and oppose those seeking to undermine the crypto sector. The crypto super PAC Defend American Jobs, associated with Fairshake, spent over $34 million supporting Moreno through October.
