Cboe Requests SEC Approval for Ether Staking in ETFs

Crypto exchange Cboe has submitted a request to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to permit staking in various spot ether (ETH) exchange-traded funds (ETFs). This news contributed to a 2% increase in the price of ETH over the past 24 hours.

Key points:

  • Prior to launching in July, several issuers included staking in their ETF applications but were required to remove it by the SEC.
  • Cboe filed amended documents for the Fidelity Ethereum Fund (FETH) and the Franklin Ethereum ETF (EZET) to reintroduce staking.
  • This request comes after the resignation of former SEC chair Gary Gensler and amidst an evolving regulatory landscape under acting chair Mark Uyeda.
  • James Seyffart from Bloomberg Intelligence indicated that approval for staking is expected this year.
  • In addition to staking, companies have filed for ETFs related to other digital assets, with the SEC reviewing applications for Solana (SOL) and XRP (XRP).
