Ethereum Developer Proposes 100X Gas Limit Increase Over Four Years

Ethereum core developers are evaluating a significant increase in the network's gas limit. A proposal by Dankrad Feist aims to raise the current limit from 36 million to 3.6 billion over four years, with gradual increases planned.

Key Points of the Proposal

  • Gradual increase of gas limit to commence around June 2025.
  • Potential for Ethereum to handle approximately 2,000 transactions per second, up from 15-30.
  • Concerns about larger blocks affecting node performance and block propagation.
  • Building upon recent efforts to increase capacity, including a proposed increase to 150 million during the Fusaka hard fork.
  • Ongoing focus on reducing storage demands and improving block processing.

Additional changes are in progress to enhance network efficiency:

  • EIP-4444: Optional storage of older block history to ease full node operation.
  • EIP-7886: Extension of time for validators to process blocks from 1-2 seconds to around 10 seconds.
  • EIP-7928: Improved transaction organization for faster processing.
  • EIP-7863: Reduction of unnecessary work across blocks to boost efficiency.

Developers anticipate these upgrades leading to the major Glamsterdam update in 2026. The Pectra upgrade is set for launch in early May 2025.

In related news, Grayscale representatives discussed with the SEC the possibility of allowing staking on Ethereum ETF products, contributing to a 0.51% increase in Ethereum's price, currently at $1,810.23.
