Ethereum Plans Next Upgrade ‘Fusaka’ to Reduce Layer-2 Costs

Ethereum's recent upgrade, Pectra, has been successfully deployed, marking the most significant change since the Merge in 2022. Key features include:

  • Enhanced staking for institutions
  • Improved wallet accessibility
  • Increased transaction efficiency

Developers are now focusing on the upcoming Fusaka upgrade, scheduled for late 2025, which will feature the PeerDAS Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP). This proposal aims to:

  • Support larger "blobs" of transaction data
  • Enable validators to validate partial blob data
  • Reduce layer-2 transaction costs

Blobs, introduced during the Dencun upgrade, help alleviate blockchain congestion by storing large transaction data off-chain, benefiting the layer-2 ecosystem like Arbitrum and Optimism.

Fusaka is expected to include additional upgrades beyond PeerDAS. However, past delays in upgrades have raised concerns within the community regarding the pace of protocol changes and leadership accountability at the Ethereum Foundation.
