Moroccan Government Warns of Fraudulent Cryptocurrency Account on X

On March 5th, Morocco’s Head of Government warned about a fraudulent account on X (formerly Twitter) impersonating Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch to promote a fake cryptocurrency. Key points include:

  • The account advertised non-existent digital currency, prompting an official alert from the government.
  • The legitimate account for updates is @ChefGov_ma.
  • This warning followed a separate incident where Bank Al-Maghrib reported scammers using AI to impersonate the bank and its Governor.

Global Impersonation Scams

Impersonation scams are rising globally. A recent case in Hong Kong involved an account pretending to be Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, claiming the government was launching a "National Hong Kong Coin" on the Solana blockchain. The scam included:

  • A misleading launch time of 02:00 PM Hong Kong Time (6:00 PM UTC).
  • Authorities issued public alerts to clarify the situation and protect citizens from fraud.

Both Moroccan and Hong Kong officials emphasize the importance of relying on official channels for accurate information.
