Polygon Unveils Rio Upgrade on Amoy Testnet Ahead of October Mainnet

The Polygon network has successfully deployed its "Rio" upgrade to the Amoy testnet, with a mainnet release expected in October. This is part of Polygon's 'GigaGas roadmap', aimed at enhancing the network's architecture for high-demand applications.

Key Technical Changes in the Polygon Rio Upgrade

  • PIP-64: Validator-Elected Block Producer (VEBloP)
    • Separates block production from block validation.
    • Increases network throughput and reduces transaction confirmation times.
    • Aims to eliminate chain reorganizations.
  • PIP-72: Witness-Based Stateless Verification
    • Allows validators to confirm blocks without storing full blockchain history.
    • Reduces hardware costs and supports greater decentralization.

These updates are designed to prepare the Proof-of-Stake network to handle up to 5,000 transactions per second. Polygon also partnered with Cypher Capital to expand its presence in the Middle East, aiming for more predictable transaction finality and higher capacity.
