Sei Network Proposes Ending Cosmos Support to Focus on Ethereum Compatibility

A developer from the Sei Network proposed to discontinue Cosmos support to simplify user transactions. The change will limit Sei users to Ethereum-compatible transactions only.

Key points of the proposal include:

  • Reduction of infrastructure overhead and complexity
  • Strengthening Sei's position within the Ethereum ecosystem
  • Potential for increased adoption and improved developer experience

Currently, Sei supports both EVM and CosmWasm but plans to pivot away from CosmWasm due to its complexity. This decision follows a significant increase in deposits to DeFi apps on Sei, reaching $1 billion, positioning it as the 15th largest blockchain by total value locked.

Sei initially struggled with adoption, attracting only $50 million in its first year, but saw growth after launching EVM support in July 2024. New users now favor EVM over CosmWasm. The current dual architecture creates unnecessary overhead, complicating debugging and testing.

The Sei Foundation will host a call on May 14 to discuss the proposal and gather community feedback.
