Telegram Launches Major Update with Third-Party Verification and NFT Gifts

Telegram's major update for 2025 introduces third-party account verification, enhanced search capabilities, and NFT-upgradeable gifts, improving platform security and user experience.

The decentralized account verification allows verified accounts to display unique logos instead of blue checkmarks. Trusted entities, including educational institutions and regulators, can verify accounts to help prevent scams and misinformation.

“This decentralized platform for additional verification will help prevent scams and reduce misinformation — with a unique proactive solution that sets a new safety standard for social platforms,” Telegram stated.

Verification applicants must undergo a review process. Approved organizations can display their logos on verified profiles, and through Telegram's Bot API, they can manage verification statuses similarly to methods used by X (formerly Twitter).

Telegram Gifts Get an NFT Upgrade

Users can now convert Telegram gifts into NFTs using Telegram Stars, featuring customizable backgrounds and icons such as Santa Hats and Homemade Cakes.

“Gifts you receive on Telegram are now able to be upgraded to collectibles. Collectible gifts have special attributes and can be transferred to other users or auctioned on NFT marketplaces,” according to Telegram.

This process requires a TON crypto wallet, and Telegram charges a fee to cover blockchain transaction costs, aligning with its cryptocurrency monetization strategies. The app previously enabled payments for games and supported mini-apps.

The update also adds emoji reactions for service messages, enhancing group interactions by allowing users to respond quickly to activities like joining a group or sending a gift.

Telegram Refines Core Functionality

Improvements to core functionalities include new message search filters for easier navigation in private chats, groups, and channels. A built-in QR code scanner has been integrated into the camera, enabling direct access to links from the app.

The update follows a successful year for Telegram, which achieved profitability in 2024 through premium subscriptions, privacy-focused advertising, and sales of Telegram Stars. This financial growth reflects the app’s commitment to innovation while prioritizing user needs.

With these updates, Telegram aims to set new standards for social platforms, combining creativity with practicality to engage its expanding user base.
