World Crypto Project Launches in U.S. with 7,500 Eye-Scanning Orbs
Sam Altman's blockchain project, World, is launching in the U.S. with plans to deploy 7,500 eye-scanning "orbs" by year-end.
The orbs will be introduced in six cities: Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, and San Francisco. Users who scan their eyes will gain access to the World app and receive an airdrop of the WLD token. The goal is to provide access to over 180 million Americans by year-end.
Key features announced include:
- Crypto-backed loans through non-custodial lending protocol Morpho
- Prediction markets via Kalshi
- A World-linked Visa debit card for WLD holders
- Integration of identity verification technology into online dating apps, starting with Tinder in Japan
Altman stated that the need for human authentication arose from advancements in artificial intelligence. He emphasized the importance of distinguishing between human and AI-generated content.
World is also establishing a factory in Richardson, Texas, to produce the orbs. Following the initial rollout, additional cities like Seattle, Orlando, San Diego, and Las Vegas are planned for future deployment.
Alex Blania, co-founder of Tools for Humanity, noted the aim for widespread availability, stating, “They will really be everywhere.”
