Belarus President Considers Cryptocurrency Mining Amid U.S. Reserve Plans
Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko suggested the country might start mining cryptocurrencies due to excess electricity availability. He stated, "If it is profitable for us, let's do it," during a conversation with the new energy minister.
This announcement aligns with U.S. government discussions on creating a national strategic crypto reserve, potentially including assets like Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, Ripple, and Cardano.
Lukashenko highlighted global trends in cryptocurrency, referencing the U.S.'s plans for a crypto reserve and suggesting Belarus should consider similar efforts.
Other nations have already engaged in crypto mining; Bhutan operates over 100 MW of bitcoin mining infrastructure and plans an additional 500 MW, holding approximately $950 million in bitcoin. El Salvador utilizes geothermal energy for its smaller-scale bitcoin mining operations.
