CME Group Reports 129% Increase in April Cryptocurrency Derivatives Volume

CME Group reported a significant increase in its cryptocurrency derivatives market in April, achieving an average daily volume (ADV) of 183,000 contracts valued at $8.9 billion.

  • ADV rose by 129% year-over-year.
  • Ether futures ADV surged 239% to 14,000 contracts.
  • Micro ether futures increased 165% to 63,000 contracts.
  • Micro bitcoin futures grew by 115% to 78,000 contracts.
  • April's overall ADV reached a record 35.9 million contracts, up 36% year-over-year.

The notional values for CME's contracts are 5 BTC for bitcoin and 50 ETH for ether. Micro contracts represent 0.1 of each cryptocurrency, allowing for more precise trading.

Over the past month, ether rose 1.1%, while bitcoin increased by 15.8%. The broader crypto market, as indicated by the CoinDesk 20 index, saw a rise of 12.1%.
