Scammers Create Scheme Targeting Other Crypto Thieves on YouTube

Crypto scammers are now targeting each other, according to a security update from Kaspersky. A new scam on YouTube involves deceptive comments from accounts pretending to be inexperienced users seeking help with transferring USDT stored in wallets.

One comment referenced a wallet containing over $8,000 in stablecoins on the Tron blockchain and asked how to transfer funds using a seed phrase. Seed phrases provide access to crypto wallets and were used as bait in this scheme.

The targeted wallet was a multi-signature wallet, requiring multiple approvals for transactions. When scammers attempted to withdraw funds by sending TRX tokens to the wallet, those tokens were redirected to another wallet controlled by the scammers.

Kaspersky noted that these scammers impersonate novices, tricking other thieves into sharing access to their wallets. This results in the scammers profiting at the expense of equally naive criminals. “The scheme primarily targets other crooked individuals,” Kaspersky stated.

Numerous instances of similar comments have emerged across various platforms, indicating a broader trend. Gas fees for transactions remain low, typically under $10, suggesting that the operation mainly targets aspiring thieves rather than executing large-scale thefts.

Ultimately, the ongoing developments highlight the evolving landscape of crypto scams, where even criminals can fall victim to their peers.
