Founded in 2011 by Jesse Powell in San Francisco, USA, Kraken began operations in September 2013 after two years of development and testing. Initially supporting Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Euro, it later added other altcoins and margin trading. Since 2014, Kraken has established itself as a reliable platform and was included in the Bloomberg Terminal.

In March 2017, Kraken acquired Cryptowatch, a website for real-time cryptocurrency tracking. By 2023, the project expanded its market in Europe by acquiring BCM.
