Ethereum confirms Sepolia Glamsterdam upgrade with ePBS on October 6

3 min

Ethereum scheduled the Glamsterdam upgrade to activate on Sepolia on October 6, 2026, at 13:53:36 UTC. Activation parameters: epoch 353,024 and slot 11,296,768. Glamsterdam merges the Amsterdam execution-layer upgrade with Gloas on the consensus layer. Hoodi and mainnet dates are not set.

Glamsterdam and EIP-7732: Protocol-Level Proposer-Builder Separation

EIP-7732 moves key elements of the proposer-builder exchange into Ethereum’s consensus protocol. Process: the proposer includes a builder’s commitment to an execution payload in the consensus block, the builder reveals the payload, and the protocol pays the proposer. This reduces dependence on trusted middleware for commitments, reveals, and payments.

Consensus validation becomes distinct from execution validation, which gives validators more time to check execution payloads. A payload timeliness committee attests to whether the builder revealed the payload and whether blob data was available on time. Validator operators and builder infrastructure teams must revise duties and interfaces before the fork.

Impact on MEV stack: parts of the workflow shift into protocol-defined mechanics. Relays and external builders are not removed by this announcement. The change defines commitments, reveals, timeliness attestations, and proposer payments at the protocol layer.

Beyond ePBS: Access Lists, Throughput, and Gas Changes

Block-level access lists under EIP-7928 record the accounts and storage slots touched in a block and the resulting state changes. Clients use these lists to parallelize state reads and transaction validation and to compute state roots more efficiently. Combined with ePBS, access lists establish a base for higher Layer 1 throughput while keeping validation feasible for node operators.

Gas accounting updates:

  • EIP-8037: raises the cost of creating state and meters it separately.
  • EIP-8038: updates state-access costs.
  • Additional changes: intrinsic transaction gas, calldata, access lists, and block gas accounting adjustments.

Operational Requirements

  • Developers: test contracts and gas estimates against new rules, especially where fixed gas stipends or hardcoded limits exist.
  • Node operators: upgrade both execution and consensus clients to compatible versions before Sepolia activation. Client release tables will list supported versions as they are confirmed.
  • Operators using external builders: follow Glamsterdam-specific upgrade instructions from provider teams.
