Google Introduces Mariner AI Agent to Enhance Online Task Management

Google has introduced Mariner, an experimental AI agent powered by Gemini 2.0, designed to autonomously navigate websites and perform tasks. As a Chrome extension, Mariner can browse spreadsheets, visit shopping platforms, and assist with online services while allowing users to make final decisions on actions like purchases.

Developed using Google’s Gemini 2.0 neural network, Mariner learns from extensive datasets of text, images, and sounds, enabling it to engage in human-like interactions with digital tools. Demis Hassabis, head of Google’s core AI lab, stated that Mariner understands when to press buttons or take actions to achieve specific goals. Google CEO Sundar Pichai described the tool as a step towards a “universal assistant”, emphasizing its potential role in daily digital interactions.

Mariner is part of Google's broader AI initiatives, which include the Gemini chatbot and AI Overviews in Google Search.
