NBA and Nascar Official X Accounts Hacked to Spread Cryptocurrency Scam
On March 4th, 2025, scammers hacked the official X accounts of the NBA and Nascar, spreading false claims about cryptocurrency launches. Key points include:
- Malicious posts appeared on both the NBA’s main and country-specific channels, as well as Nascar’s competition accounts.
- False announcements included the launch of non-existent $NBA and $Nascar coins on the Solana blockchain, with a fake press release.
- A post claimed, "The NBA is taking the game to the next level. Introducing $NBA Coin – our official digital asset on Solana," along with a link to a contract address.
- Despite the NBA's attempts to delete the posts, they were reposted multiple times before resolution.

This incident reflects a growing trend of scams targeting prominent individuals and organizations. Similar fraudulent schemes have exploited reputations to promote fake crypto assets. Recently, a fake account impersonating the Moroccan Head of Government was used for promoting a non-existent cryptocurrency.
The NBA has previously engaged in cryptocurrency through initiatives like the 2021 launch of NBA Top Shot, which allows for blockchain-based digital collectibles. Some teams also accept cryptocurrency for in-arena transactions. However, there are no plans for an official NBA Coin, and the league may focus on enhancing cybersecurity measures to prevent future hacks.
