Ethereum launches clear signing to improve wallet transaction safety

**Ethereum pushes “clear signing” to cut wallet approval risks**

The Ethereum Foundation is promoting “clear signing” to stop blind approvals — users confirming transactions they cannot understand.

Clear signing means wallets show human-readable prompts instead of raw contract data. Sending tokens, setting spend limits, listing NFTs or changing permissions should be described in plain language before users click confirm.

Losses often start when someone signs something unclear. Malicious sites can hide dangerous permissions; even legitimate dapps may display unreadable wallet screens. The new standard aims to close that gap between self-custody and comprehension.

Institutions also benefit. Ambiguous approval screens increase operational risk for teams using hardware wallets or multi-signature setups. Clearer signing can reduce mistakes in high-value transactions and make on-chain finance feel less like guesswork.

The challenge is adoption. Wallets, dapps and infrastructure providers must format prompts consistently and handle contract metadata precisely. Without broad rollout, users may still encounter confusing or misleading approvals.

Clear signing won’t eliminate phishing or smart contract exploits, but it can make the signing process less of a black box — improving daily safety for both retail and institutional crypto users.
