ECB prepares to invest own funds in tokenized euro securities via Pontes
The European Central Bank has begun preparatory work to invest a small portion of its own-funds portfolio in tokenized euro-denominated securities, moving from infrastructure development to prospective direct usage.
Scope and Asset Universe
The initiative is separate from monetary policy. It targets the ECB’s non-monetary own-funds portfolio with an initial focus on euro-area public-sector and European supranational issuers: central governments, regional governments, and agencies.
Settlement via Pontes
Planned purchases are intended to settle in central-bank money through Pontes, the Eurosystem’s new infrastructure for settling tokenized financial assets. The ECB is preparing to act as both infrastructure provider and user, establishing an internal use case for Pontes.
Status and Next Steps
No tokenized securities have been purchased yet. The ECB has launched preparatory work only. Operational timing and execution depend on completion of preparation and subsequent Executive Board review.
Implications
Direct ECB holdings of tokenized public-sector securities would shift tokenization from pilots to institutional portfolio management, signaling a formal pathway for tokenized settlement in the euro area and potential near-term adoption by public-sector issuers.
