IBM links bank systems to Swift tokenized deposit ledger via ISO 20022
IBM has introduced a beta integration that connects its Digital Asset Haven platform to Swift’s blockchain-based shared ledger. The integration allows banks to instruct tokenized-deposit transactions using the ISO 20022 payment message format they already use. Swift reports tests underway with 17 institutions. IBM is also launching an on-premises version of Digital Asset Haven for deployment on IBM Z and LinuxONE within bank data centers.
Key Points: IBM–Swift Integration
- Adapter support: Banks can send tokenized-deposit instructions to Swift’s shared ledger through ISO 20022 messages without adopting blockchain-specific interfaces.
- Reach: Swift connects more than 12,500 institutions in over 200 markets.
- Ledger design: Swift’s shared ledger focuses on bank-issued tokenized deposits. Transactions operate around the clock, with final settlement through established systems.
- Testing cohort: 17 first-mover institutions are participating in trials of the model.
Digital Asset Haven: Deployment Options
- On-premises beta: IBM is adding an on-premises deployment of Digital Asset Haven using IBM Z and LinuxONE, increasing control for regulated institutions.
- Operational alignment: The stack positions blockchain infrastructure beneath ISO 20022 messaging, existing compliance processes, and bank-controlled operations.
- Tokenized deposits: Positioned as a bank-led alternative to stablecoins, combining programmability and settlement benefits with regulated bank liabilities.
