Michael Saylor Presents Crypto Framework to SEC Task Force Meeting
Michael Saylor, founder of Strategy, met with the SEC's crypto task force to present a document titled “Digital Assets Framework, Principles, and Opportunity for the United States.” The meeting aimed to promote cryptocurrency integration into the US economy.
Saylor’s Proposal
- Establishes a taxonomy for cryptocurrencies including fiat-pegged coins, debt/equity assets, commodities like Bitcoin, NFTs, utility tokens, and commodity-backed tokens.
- Defines roles for owners, exchanges, and issuers to ensure accountability in the crypto community.
- Proposes a strategic Bitcoin reserve potentially generating $16 to $81 million for the US Treasury.
Matthew Sigel from VanEck noted that if Bitcoin appreciates by 25% annually, it could help offset 18% of projected US debt growth.
The SEC’s Crypto Task Force
- Created on January 21 to develop a comprehensive framework for crypto assets.
- Aims to establish clear registration rules and regulatory powers to foster innovation while protecting users.
- Issuers must comply with fair disclosure rules, limiting issuance costs to 1% of asset value and annual compliance expenses to 0.1%.
- The SEC estimates that proper regulation could increase the crypto industry’s value from $25 billion to $10 trillion.
Saylor’s Meeting with El Salvador’s President
Saylor also met with El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele to discuss expanding Bitcoin adoption in the country, which recognized Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021 but later adjusted its laws due to IMF pressure.
