Tokenized Deposits Integrated With RTP And CHIPS
The Clearing House operates core U.S. payment infrastructure that clears and settles more than $2 trillion per day across wires, ACH, checks, and real-time payments. The On-Chain Money Initiative adds tokenized deposits to this environment. Quant will coordinate movement of tokenized deposits between participating institutions and connect the network to existing fiat rails RTP and CHIPS. This differs from public stablecoins: a tokenized deposit remains a deposit liability of the issuing bank. The blockchain layer changes how the claim is recorded, programmed, and transferred while maintaining the underlying banking relationship.
Programmable Bank Money Nears Defined Architecture
Announced in June, the initiative now has a specified technology architecture with Quant’s selection. The Clearing House states the system could support corporate treasury, liquidity management, cross-border payments, and digital-asset settlement. Payments could be programmed to execute automatically once agreed conditions are met. Access for participating institutions is targeted for the first half of 2027, indicating infrastructure development rather than a live consumer network. The scale is notable: instead of isolated bank pilots, a shared tokenized-deposit network linked to nationwide payment rails would align programmable onchain money with existing infrastructure. If successful, banks could use a unified stack that combines current payment systems with programmable deposits.
