SEC loses crypto-friendly voice as Hester Peirce exits in November
**Hester Peirce to Leave SEC in November 2026 for Academia**
SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce — known in the crypto community as “Crypto Mom” — will step down in November 2026, ending a key regulatory tenure and joining Regent University School of Law as associate professor.
Her second term expired June 5, 2025. SEC rules allow commissioners to stay up to 18 months beyond expiration, setting the outer limit at December 2026. Peirce’s exit comes as the SEC faces unresolved policy battles on token classification, exchange oversight, custody, staking, ETF rules and disclosure standards.
For years, Peirce has pressed for **clearer crypto-specific frameworks** and **safe harbor provisions** instead of relying heavily on enforcement. Her absence could leave the SEC with fewer commissioners, slowing votes and complicating crypto rulemaking — especially if new appointments lag.
The agency’s direction will hinge on the SEC chair, staff priorities and congressional or court action, but losing Peirce removes a consistent pro-blockchain voice. While she won’t be inside the SEC, her academic role will keep her active in securities-law and digital-asset discourse, likely influencing debates outside the agency.
