Ethereum delays Hoodi fork over gas-accounting risks

TL;DR: Ethereum developers paused the next Glamsterdam step on the Hoodi testnet after researchers found applications that may rely on gas-accounting assumptions affected by the upgrade. The Ethereum Foundation asked teams to audit code before advancing.

In a November 6 update, Ethereum Foundation developer Marius van der Wijden said the Glamsterdam testing process would not proceed to the Hoodi fork until identified issues were resolved. The concern is application compatibility, not network stability. EIP-8037 and EIP-8038 were flagged for deeper review.

Why gas-accounting changes affect applications

Gas represents the cost of executing transactions and smart-contract operations. Developers also use gas properties inside designs and tests. If the protocol changes accounting, code built on prior assumptions can behave differently without edits to business logic.

ChainSecurity found projects that depend on invariants that the proposed changes could break. An invariant is a condition developers expect to hold across executions. Breaking such conditions can introduce incorrect behavior, unexpected failures, or security exposure.

The engineering team is working with ChainSecurity and Dedaub, and is conducting internal audits. The Foundation published a repository that describes eight relevant invariants with examples for developer checks. The review involves affected application teams, not only protocol engineers.

Process and scope of the pause

AllCoreDevs decided not to fork Hoodi until the issues are resolved. Work on the later Hegota upgrade continues in parallel. The bottleneck sits in Glamsterdam compatibility review, not in a broader development halt.

Operational guidance for teams: check whether contracts or surrounding code depend on the identified gas assumptions, test against updated specifications, and document affected flows. A contract can be implicated through components that assume specific gas use.

What to watch

The update did not set a new deployment date. Meaningful milestones: revised specifications if required, confirmed remediation of affected cases, a successful Hoodi test, and guidance for applications that may need modifications.

Ethereum’s broader activity continues independently of this testnet decision. NewsBTC tracked ETF flows, but fund demand and protocol engineering are separate domains. The verifiable development: a pause after discovering compatibility risk during testing.
