KuCoin Applies for MiCAR License in Austria to Enhance EU Operations
KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH has applied for a Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR) license in Austria to enhance its European operations. Approval from the Financial Market Authority (FMA) would enable KuCoin to offer compliant crypto services across 30 EU and EEA member states.
Key points:
- Vienna is chosen as the new European headquarters due to its favorable regulatory environment.
- KuCoin aims to align with Europe's regulatory framework while ensuring user security.
- Experienced executives, Oliver Stauber and Christian Niedermüller, have been appointed to lead the new operations.
KuCoin has received five regulatory licenses globally and addressed over 3,600 law enforcement requests. However, it faced challenges, including:
- A January 2025 settlement in the US involving a $300 million fine for operating as an unlicensed money-transmitting business.
- Market bans and legal issues in Canada, New York, and the UK.
Despite these challenges, KuCoin continues to focus on regulatory compliance and expanding its global presence.
