Bitcoin supply hits 20 million; only 1 million left to mine
Title: 20 millionth Bitcoin mined. 95.24% of supply issued.
Miners hit 20 million. Foundry USA mined the milestone, pushing Bitcoin to 95.24% of its 21M cap.
It happened at block height 939,999. The pool took a 3.125 BTC reward. See the milestone on the network explorer here.
The current payout reflects the April 2024 halving. Daily issuance fell from ~900 BTC to ~450 BTC after that cut.
One million coins remain. Issuance stretches for ~114 years. The last full coin could come in the 2090s. The final satoshi is expected around 2140. The next halving lands on April 11, 2028.
Not all 20M are accessible. River Financial and Chainalysis estimate 2.3M–3.7M BTC are lost. About 1.8M vanished in the early years. Another 230 BTC is unspendable due to the genesis block and early scripts. The tradable supply sits well below 20M.
Miner economics tighten. The subsidy keeps shrinking. Daily issuance is projected below 30 BTC in the 2040s and under 2 BTC by the 2060s. As subsidies fade, miner income must rely on transaction fees. Whether fees alone can sustain security remains open.
Price context at the milestone: Bitcoin traded near $69,282. Down ~21% year-to-date. Up ~3.44% over the week.
