min

DekaBank has initiated cryptocurrency-related services for institutional clients, including buying, selling, custody, and management. The bank oversees €377 billion ($395 billion) in assets and has spent nearly two years preparing for this launch.

The service is not available to private buyers. DekaBank received a digital asset custody license under the German Banking Act, approved by the European Central Bank and BaFin, enhancing security for institutional clients.

  • DekaBank aims to assist savings banks and other institutions with its experience and infrastructure.
  • Martin K. Müller emphasized the bank's readiness to support institutional customers.
  • Institutional investors are expected to manage risks associated with crypto investments effectively.

German Banks Expand Crypto Services

  • Landesbank Baden-Württemberg (LBBW) partnered with Bitpanda to provide corporate clients access to cryptocurrencies.
  • Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken plan to offer crypto access to retail customers by summer, led by DZ Bank.
  • Commerzbank is collaborating with Crypto Finance to provide crypto trading and custody for corporate clients.

Impact on Institutional Adoption

DekaBank's entry into the crypto sector may encourage traditional finance integration with crypto markets. This could attract more institutions, increasing capital and liquidity. The bank's cautious approach might also inspire clearer regulations, benefiting both institutional and retail investors.
