Polymarket sets 9.5% odds U.S. announces Iran blockade end by Oct 15

3 min

Iran blockade Polymarket odds price an official U.S. announcement ending or suspending the naval blockade of Iran by October 15 at 9.5%, up from 8.5% a day earlier. Resolution requires an explicit U.S. statement that ends or suspends the blockade. Talks, pauses, or looser enforcement do not qualify.

Strait of Hormuz impact on oil and Bitcoin

The Strait of Hormuz links the Persian Gulf to open seas between Iran and Oman. About 20% of global oil and significant LNG volumes transit the chokepoint, with limited alternative routes. Energy prices react to blockade headlines: Brent rose about 4% on October 8 after tanker attacks, then eased to around $103 on October 9 after President Donald Trump pledged no attack on Iran before the November 3 midterm elections. Weekly trend remains higher.

Bitcoin has tracked these risk signals. It fell to near $80,300 on Thursday amid roughly $1.09 billion in leveraged liquidations, including $931 million in longs. After Trump’s post, Bitcoin rebounded to about $82,500, still down about 4% on the week. Oil above $100 sustains inflation and Treasury yield pressure on risk assets. Calmer Iran headlines support crypto. New tanker attacks pressure it.

Polymarket odds after Trump’s pledge

Trump’s October 8 Truth Social post followed reports of Pentagon strike options. He said the U.S. is having “productive discussions” with Iran and “will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections.” He did not announce an end or suspension of the blockade. Iran’s Tasnim said Tehran is reviewing a U.S. reply to its proposal to reopen the Strait within seven days.

Traders differentiate a no-strike pledge from ending the blockade:
- 9.5%: announcement by October 15
- 20.5%: by October 31
- 36%: by November 30
- 44.65%: by December 31

Related shipping markets imply slower normalization:
- Hormuz traffic normal by October 31: 2%, down 26 points since mid-August, $1.94 million volume
- By December 31: 19%, $14.45 million volume

Key dates: Iran’s response to the seven-day proposal, U.S. CPI on October 14, Federal Reserve decision on October 28, U.S. midterms on November 3.

Bottom line: Odds signal reduced escalation risk from the no-strike pledge but low probability of a near-term end to the blockade. Elevated oil prices and higher yields remain a headwind for crypto until shipping and geopolitical risks decline.
