A decentralized exchange, or DEX, supports asset swaps through a wallet and smart contracts. Start with the network and exact token: a familiar platform name does not establish that the asset has a suitable pool.

Checked on 23 October 2026. This guide compares swap conditions and the steps before signing.

Before a DEX swap

  • The token must be on a supported network with the correct contract address.
  • Keep the network's native asset in your wallet for gas.
  • Pool fees, gas and execution-price changes are separate costs.
  • A token-spending approval and the swap itself are different actions.

Choose a swap route

Choose a swap route
Task Compare Common error
Swap a widely traded token Multiple pools or routes Looking only at the fee percentage
Buy a small token Contract address and liquidity Buying an unrelated token with the same name
Move value across networks A separate bridge and destination receipt Treating an ordinary swap as a bridge
Make a small trade Gas relative to trade size Spending more on the network than the fee saving

How a Uniswap swap works

The Uniswap documentation explains pool-based swaps, fees and execution limits. The user reviews a quote and signs with a wallet.

  • Check minimum output before signing.
  • Distinguish your trade's price impact from allowed slippage between quote and execution.
  • Compare the complete route. Several pool hops can produce a different result from a direct pair.

ETH on one network and a representation on another are not interchangeable for a direct transfer. Different network versions of USDT require the same care.

Cost components

Cost components
Cost How to account for it
Pool fee Reflected in the selected route's output
Gas Paid with the network's native asset
Token approval Can require a separate paid transaction
Price impact Depends on trade size and liquidity
Bridging Separate if a cross-network transfer is needed

On a $50-equivalent swap, a $5 network charge is already 10% before other costs. This is an arithmetic example, not a live gas quote. Compare the final result for small trades.

DEX and exchange accounts

The user controls the wallet and keys, including address checks, approvals and backups. A support website does not establish that an executed transaction can be reversed.

For an initial purchase using bank money, consider a CEX or local funding route. A DEX web interface can also have access conditions distinct from the underlying protocol.

First-transaction checklist

  1. Open the official interface from a verified source.
  2. Match the network and token address.
  3. Review spending approval, gas and minimum output.
  4. Sign only an understood operation and retain its transaction hash.

Frequently asked questions

Answers about this selection and its practical use.

Is a DEX always cheaper than a CEX?

No. Gas and price impact can outweigh trading-fee differences, especially on a small amount.

Can I swap any token with the same name?

No. Different contracts can share a name and ticker. Verify the address and network.

Does a failed transaction always refund gas?

No. Network work can consume gas even when the swap fails.
