Swan’s John Haar: $65k–$70k BTC range may be the cycle floor as 2022-style risks fade

Swan MD John Haar says the backdrop changed. He argues the $65k–$70k band has held as a floor for two months and could mark the bottom for Bitcoin (Haar’s post).

“Those predicting a further decline are drawing comparisons to 2022,” he wrote. “But the macro, regulatory, and institutional landscape today is fundamentally different.”

Macro first. CPI sits near 2.5%–3% YoY by his count, not at 40‑year highs. He contrasts 2022’s “fastest rate‑hiking cycle” with steady to slightly lower rates now, a return to balance‑sheet expansion, and a multi‑year stretch of month‑over‑month M2 growth that supports liquidity (inflation and policy context; M2 growth).

Fiscal stance stays loose, he says. US deficits around 5%–6% of GDP have persisted for 3+ years. He frames this as at least neutral, if not supportive, versus 2022’s headwinds.

Contagion next. 2022 saw Terra/Luna, Celsius, BlockFi, Three Arrows, Voyager, and FTX collapse in sequence. Haar argues counterparties look stronger today. He cites BlockFills as a failure, but far smaller than 2022 blowups.

Institutional demand is the kicker. He tallies “Strategy” buying about $270m for ~8,000 BTC in 2022; $22.5b in 2025 for 226,000 BTC; and $8.5b YTD 2026 for 108,000 BTC. He points to live spot Bitcoin ETFs with billions in AUM, BlackRock’s public push, Morgan Stanley preparing a spot ETF, Vanguard allowing spot ETF buys, and Harvard’s endowment reportedly holding BTC (BlackRock’s stance; Morgan Stanley’s ETF; Harvard endowment).

He adds a caveat. Floors can fail. War, supply chain shocks, or energy shortages could still hit risk assets.

Key takeaways for investors:
- 2022 analogy weakens: inflation lower, rates stable, liquidity returning (source; source)
- Less systemic crypto contagion versus 2022’s cascade (source)
- Institutional bid deeper: spot ETFs live; large allocators engaged (BlackRock; Morgan Stanley; Harvard)

At press time, BTC traded at $73,862.
